STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Ever since I studied the significance of agriculture in my elementary schooling years, I have recognized it as the backbone of the Indian economy. Eventually, my belief in this notion has only strengthened with the passage of time. However, in a global context, I have come to realize that feeding the estimated 10 billion world population by 2050 can be an extremely herculean task amidst the advent of climate change and disruptions like the global pandemic. Agencies like the World Bank and Food & Agricultural Organization have rightly manifested the value of Agricultural development, which can be an instrumental tool towards achieving the Sustainable Development goals of Healthy well-being and Zero Hunger across the globe. Having explored the realm of remote sensing and GIS for more than four years now, I envision precision and data-driven agriculture or forestry as the pinnacle of such developments.

The vibrant waves of next-gen predictive techniques are rapidly being utilized to map vegetation and improve agricultural efficiency. During the tenure of my Master’s education, followed by my professional career as a Research Fellow, I have rigorously explored the impact of satellite and drone imagery to collect loads of data that I thereafter optimized to generate resilient ML models. It is noteworthy that although a major chunk of my research experience in remote sensing has revolved around its application pertaining to soil, water, rocks, and forest cover, my personal interest lies in vegetation. My major motivation behind applying for a Ph.D. program at your illustrious institution is to address the rising concerns of global carbon emission, deforestation, food security, and water quality by delving deeper into the domain of remote sensing. Your program shall offer me cutting-edge academic rigor, rich global exposure, and, most importantly, the career-defining opportunity to enrich my research insights under the fruitful guidance of (Professor Name).

While growing up, I was immensely enthralled by the construction of giant buildings and public infrastructure in and around my city. Such exposure initially piqued my interest in mechanics, statistical analysis, and material science; following upon which I went on to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering. The interdisciplinary study curriculum of this program not only immersed me into a comprehensive learning mechanism but also enabled me to sharpen my designing skill sets and problem-solving aptitude. This effectively prepared a viable ground for my professional career as a Site Engineer, where I efficiently proved the mettle of my acquired knowledge and construction resilience. Subsequently, I left my job after 7 months as I had to take care of my mother, who was diagnosed with Cancer. I was deeply impacted by her endurance and willpower as it had helped me to continue my further education in my aspired field. Further, I went on to crack the GATE examination with an AIR of 281 in Geomatics Engineering and secured admission to the M. Tech.-Remote Sensing program at the renowned (Name of College).

I would like to mention that my earliest inclination towards remote sensing stems from my thesis in B. Tech that I had prepared on the topic of Morphometric Analysis of the Subarnarekha River using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques. This thesis had equipped me with a prior edge in remote sensing that I substantially utilized to analytically think and understand the complex concepts of my Master’s education. I channeled my exploratory mindset and technical edge to make the most of the experiential activities that I was proactively involved in. I prepared my thesis on the Impact of climate change on surface water bodies of the Ganga river basin along the lines of the remote sensing approach under the guidance of (Professor Name). The major takeaway from this thesis was that it solidified my information management and detail orientation skills, which hugely benefitted my research career ahead.

I joined the coveted (Name of Organization) and got the opportunity to work in its Defence Terrain Research Laboratory for more than 2 years. Here, I worked on several projects on flood inundation mapping, rainfall time series analysis, and soil spectroscopy. For flood inundation, I used the Sentinel-1, while for rainfall analysis, I used the CHIRPS data. It also improved my hands-on skills on Google Earth Engine to perform analysis and mapping on it. At the DRDO, I also worked on a project named DST, where Hyperspectral Images were utilized to estimate soil texture information through the soil spectral library. It involved the usage of ENVI software for the classification of soil texture. I further got to expand my grip on hyperspectral remote sensing by applying it for mangrove species discrimination and canopy chlorophyll estimation at the (Name of Organization). Here, I also used R for Machine learning and pre-processing of data to develop an efficient model.

Owing to my critical thinking dexterity and considerable presentation skills, I delivered a conference presentation at the National Symposium held at my College. The presentation was on “Assessing forest cover change in Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, Jharkhand, India using cloud computing platform” and it was tremendously appreciated by my professors. In conjunction with this, I have also submitted a range of articles in journals that are currently under review for publication. At this juncture of my career, I have gained extensive exposure to Machine Learning and Data Analysis, but this is not sufficient to leverage my aspired research endeavors. I hold a strong conviction towards attaining a more in-depth knowledge of remote-sensing of vegetation either in Precision Agriculture or Forestry; as that would allow me to contribute through my ground-breaking research in the future.

I am eagerly looking forward to developing my grasp on advanced remote sensing of vegetation under the wings of (Professor Name). I have found his/her research work extremely inspiring and insightful, prominently because a majority of these works coincide with my research interests. Under his/her experienced supervision, I would be able to furnish my pragmatic approaches to remote sensing by exploring their broader applications in real-world scenarios. The state-of-the-art research infrastructure is yet another motivating factor for me to specifically opt for your University.

The institution boasts robust ties with top-notch industries, institutions, and global communities which makes the research landscape at your institution more impactful and visionary. I bring with me a broad range of programming and software skills along with an exceptional stronghold on sophisticated remote sensing tools and instruments. Through this proficiency, I want to contribute to ongoing research at Universities and demonstrate my multi-faceted resourcefulness. Achieving the Ph.D. qualification from a globally renowned University like yours would open the doors of several avenues for me after returning to my homeland. I would be able to apply as a scientist in the same organizations where I have previously worked as a Research Fellow. I look upon this program as a key to carving my niche along the lines of emerging technological disruption in the remote sensing discipline. Towards the other end of my study tenure, I want to explore the intricacies of Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar), which is massively being integrated with aerial, satellite, and UAV platforms. Therefore, I hereby submit my candidature with the hope that esteemed admission committees would find me a worthy overseas candidate for the desired Ph.D. program.
